“Dear God, not another low-budget, campy and cliché’ gay movie where buff twinkies burst into song for no reason whatsoever except to desperately want to recapture the MGM golden years! This was my reaction when I first heard The Big Gay Musical was in production. Ah, but… [the producers] have created a wonderful genre-blended story that is terrifically entertaining and has a political conscience…” More from NewYorkCool.com… Divine Inspiration When it came to casting his religion-themed film The Big Gay Musical, Fred M. Caruso handed down two top commandments: “Thou shalt be hot” and “Thou shalt be out.” By Brandon Voss In The Big Gay Musical, actors Paul and Eddie (Daniel Robinson and Joey Dudding) are starring as the first same-sex couple in Adam & Steve: Just the Way God Made ’Em! an off-Broadway tuner that looks at Genesis through lavender-colored lenses. But the real gay drama is offstage, where Eddie comes out to his religious parents and Paul ditches dating to whore around. Having premiered at Philadelphia’s QFest in July before a brief Provincetown run, The Big Gay Musical now opens in New York City on September 11 and plays more than 20 LGBT film festivals around the world this fall. First-time screenwriter Fred M. Caruso (who codirected the film with Slutty Summer’s Casper Andreas and penned the songs with NEWSical’s Rick Crom) took a break from writing the second installment of a planned TBGM trilogy to tell Advocate.com why his movie is so much sexier than Prayers for Bobby. More from The Advocate… “Paul (Daniel Robinson) and Eddie (Joey Dudding) work as actors/singers in “Adam and Steve Just the Way God Made ‘Em,” an Off-Broadway musical that has just begun its preview phase. The musical’s premise centers on alternate version of the Book of Genesis that involves Adam and Steve becoming a gay couple after Eve eats the forbidden fruit from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil and gets banished from the garden. In turn, the show’s dialogue and songs open up a wide variety of themes ranging from religion to sexual identity and tolerance….” Read more at the NYC Movie Guru… With a cast of incredible Broadway talent The Big Gay Musical begins its theatrical run in Provincetown Sunday, August 9th before its New York premier on Sept 11th. Paul & Eddie have just begun previews for the new Off-Broadway musical “Adam & Steve Just the Way God Made ‘Em.” Their lives strangely mirror the characters they are playing; Paul is looking for the perfect man & Eddie is dealing with how his sexuality & faith can mix. After yet another disastrous dating experience, Paul has an epiphany. He is done dating & just wants to be a slut like the sexy chorus boys that share his dressing room. Eddie has to tell his parents that he’s gay & is starring in a show that calls the bible the “Breeder’s Informational Book of Living Examples.” Eddie comes out to his family & Paul goes on the internet. Eddie’s parents are destroyed by the news & Paul can’t even have a good one-night stand. But after musical numbers with scantly clad tap dancing angels, a retelling of Genesis, tele-evangelists, a camp that attempts to turn gay kids straight & a bunch of showtunes, everyone realizes that life gets better once they accept who they really are: just the way God made ‘em! The CD will include over 15 tracks, all the original music (by Rick Crom & Fred M. Caruso) from the film & some contemporary tracks that are also featured in the movie. Among the original songs are “I’m Gonna Go Straight to Heaven,” “God Loves Gays,” “I Wanna Be A Slut,” “As I Am,” “Eve’s Lament,” “Musical Theatre Love Story” & “Someone Up There.” Read More… Embrem Entertainment announced today it has acquired worldwide distribution rights to “The Big Gay Musical,” a movie musical romantic comedy starring many Broadway actors and shot in New York in the fall of 2008.
